The Shining Stars: 09 – Sayyidunā ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affān (2)

TSSS Blog Poster 09 - Uthman ibn 'Affan

Outline

Introduction

In the first part of Sayyidunā ‘Uthmān’s episode from The Shining Stars Series, we learnt about Sayyidunā ‘Uthmān and his parents. We also learnt about him being among the first 10 to embrace Islam.

We discussed the fact that his household was among the first to migrate to Abyssinia after the hostility against the followers of Islam became unbearable.

Also in that episode, we learnt about Sayyidunā ‘Uthman’s contributions to Islam, especially in Madinah. From there, we moved on to understand his roles during the caliphates of Sayyidunā Abū Bakr and Sayyidunā ‘Umar raḍiya Allāhu ‘anhumā.

This episode is Part 2 of Sayyidunā ‘Uthmān, a Shining Star from The Shining Stars Series. Brought to you by GSalam.Net and Al-Bushra by GSalam.

Welcome to Part 2 of Sayyidunā ‘Uthmān ibn ‘Affān, our Shining Star of this episode. One of the first 10 to accept Islam.  He was the one and only who had the honour to marry two of the Prophet’s daughters. For that he was called “Dhū al-Nūrayn” (the companion of two lights).

After the passing of the second caliph, Sayyidunā ‘Umar, Sayyidunā ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affān was elected to be the third caliph of Islam.

Sayyidunā Uthman: The 3rd Caliph of Islam

23 years after Hijrah, 13 years after the passing of the Prophet ṣallā Allāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam. At an estimated age of 70, Sayyidunā ‘Uthman became the third caliph of Islam.

The first six years of his caliphate witnessed relative calmness, peace and stability. But this state of calmness, peace and stability was challenged and tested in the second part of his caliphate.

While people in the calibre of ‘Uthman and ‘Ali were subjects under the caliphates of Abū Bakr and ‘Umar, the same can’t be said to the caliphates of ‘Uthman and ‘Ali.

Why? Because the majority of the companions have already passed on. And a significant number of those who were still alive no longer stayed in Madīnah.

More interestingly, time had changed. And so was the generation. There was a dynamic change in the Muslim community. A new generation had emerged. A generation that knew more comfort than they could think of hardship.

This is in addition to the existence of the Munāfiqūn, who found a safe ground for them to operate and spread rumours and fitnah around.

Administratively, Sayyidunā ‘Uthmān didn’t change much of the policies of his predecessor, ‘Umar. But obviously, he was more lenient in handling them. He was more forgiving. Perhaps, his kindness in nature has encouraged those with smaller minds and filthy hearts to revolt  against him.

Sayyidunā ‘Uthman’s Legacy

Sayyidunā ‘Uthman himself is a legacy of his own self. And every encounter of his has registered a good legacy for him. But there are three things he did as a Caliph which are probably the most outstanding of all of his legacies. Because, until now, they are still relevant, as they affect you and me directly.

His Compilation of the Qur’an

By now you know that Sayyidunā Abū Bakr was the first to compile the Qur’an. And now we’re saying Sayyidunā ‘Uthman also compiled the Qur’an. The difference between both complications is that during the time of the Prophet until the caliphate of Abū Bakr, the Qur’an was mainly preserved by heart. Any documented piece was partial and sometimes, parts of surahs.

Therefore, Sayyidunā ‘Abū Bakr got the scholars of the Qur’an among the companions to have the Qur’an documented in one book. Everyone had his own at that time. This is because a number of those who have memorized the Qur’an were killed in one instance.

As for Sayyidunā ‘Uthman’s compilation, it happened when the Islamic Caliphate had expanded to include lands where the people were not native Arabic speaking people. Also, although the Qur’an was compiled in Abu Bakr’s time, many people had their own versions.  And many would read it according to their dialects that might have not necessarily been approved. So there was a need to have officially referenced version(s).

You can imagine someone printing the Qur’an not in accordance to the ‘Uthmānī version. Will you purchase or make use of it? If you do, how would you verify it?

The same thing happened. There were different versions. So Sayyidunā ‘Uthman ensured that all versions were brought, revised, reviewed and approved. That’s what’s been called The ‘Uthmānī Qur’an.

His Expansion of the Two Holy Mosques

Besides compiling the Qur’an which has been preserved to what we have in our hands today, Sayyidunā ‘Uthmān also expanded the two holy mosques.

As the Khalīfah (caliph), he expanded al-Masjid al-Ḥarām in Makkah in 26 Hijrah. Three years later, in the year 29 Hijrah he expanded al-Masjid al-Nabawī. In fact, he did that to accommodate the increasing number of people who continues to grow to the two mosques.

Sayyidunā ‘Uthman’s Family

One of the most known stories pertaining to Sayyidunā ‘Uthman’s marital life is his marriage to two of the Prophet’s daughters, Ruqayyah and later on Umm Kulthūm after the passing of Ruqayyah.

While in Makkah, the Prophet married his daughters, Ruqayyah to ‘Utbah and Umm Kulthūm to ‘Utaybah both of who were the sons of Abū Lahab. When Sūrah al-Masad descended to curse Abū Lahab for his evil and hostility against the Prophet and against Islam, the man took revenge against himself (thinking he took a revenge against the Prophet). He was quick to order his sons to divorce the Prophet’s two daughters. And they did.

When Sayyidunā ‘Uthman heard about it, he proposed to the Prophet for the hands of Ruqayyah. Of course, the Prophet was glad to give her to him. But 12 years later Sayyidah Ruqayyah raḍiya Allāhu ‘anhā passed on. After her passing, the Prophet married him Umm Kulthūm. With that, the honour of marrying two of the Prophet’s daughters, Sayyidunā Uthman was known as Dhū al-Nūrayn. (the companion of two lights).

Sayyidunā ‘Uthmān ibn ‘Affān raḍiya Allāhu ‘anhu experienced eight marriages, which fruited for him 14 children altogether. Here’s a breakdown of them.

Before Islam, Sayyidunā ‘Uthman married two wives.

The first was Umm ‘Amr bint Jundub.  With her, he had:

  • ‘Amr (died 8 years after hijrah),
  • Khālid,
  • Abān (lived a very long age and died 105 after hijrah),
  • ‘Umar (died 80 Hijrah) and
  • Maryam

His second wife was Fāṭimah bint al-Walīd. With her, he had three children:

  • Al-Walīd,
  • Sa’īd and
  • Umm Sa’īd.

The two marriages took place before Islam. After Islam, he married Ruqayyah bint Muhammad, and with her, he was blessed with one child:

  • ‘Abdullāh. This ‘Abdullāh died in Madīnah when he was six.

After the passing of Ruqayyah during Badr, the Prophet married him Sayyidatunā Umm Kulthūm. They were gifted with no child.

After Umm Kulthūm’s passing, he married Fākhitah bint Ghazwān ibn Jābir.  With Fākhitah he had:

  • ‘Abdullāh al-Aṣghar. This ‘Abdullah also died in his childhood.

Later on, he married Umm al-Banīn bint ‘Uyaynah bin Ḥiṣn. With Umm al-Banīn bint ‘Uyaynah he had:

  • ‘Abd al-Malik, who also died in his infancy.

He also married Ramlah bint Shaybah ibn Rabī’ah. With Ramlah bint Shaybah he had three children:

  • ‘Ā’ishah,
  • Umm Abān, and
  • Umm ‘Amr.

And he also married Nā’ilah bint al-Farāfiṣah ibn al-Aḥwaṣ. And there’s no records of them having children.

  • Al-Walīd ibn ‘Uqbah,
  • Khālid ibn ‘Uqbah,
  • ‘Amārah ibn ‘Uqbah and
  • Umm Kulthūm bint ‘Uqbah.

“While the Prophet was in one of the gardens of Medina, reclining against a pillow and fixing a stick in a mud, that a person came asking for permission to enter. The Prophet said: “Open it for him and give him glad tidings of Paradise.” And it was Abu Bakr. I opened (the gate) for him and gave him the glad tidings of Paradise. Then another person came asking for permission to enter. The Prophet said: Open the gate and give him the glad tidings of Paradise. He said: I went away and, it was ‘Umar. I opened the gate for him and gave him the glad tidings of Paradise. Then another man came asking for permission to enter. The Prophet said: Open the gate and give him the glad tidings of Paradise after a trial would afflict him. When I opened, it was ‘Uthmān ibn ‘Affān. I opened the gate and gave him the glad tidings of Paradise and informed him (what the Prophet had said). Thereupon he said: O Allah, grant me steadfastness. Allah is the One Whose help is to be sought.”

#3: He Is the Most Modest of the Ummah of the Prophet

Imām al-Tirmidhī reports from the narration of Sayyidunā Anas ibn Mālik raḍiya Allāhu ‘anhu that the Prophet ṣallā Allāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam said:

“The most merciful of my Ummah to my Ummah is Abu Bakr, and the most severe of them concerning the order of Allah is ‘Umar, and the most truly modest of them is ‘Uthman bin ‘Affān. #4: The Angels Were Shy of Him

Imam Muslim reports from the narration of Sayyidatunā ‘Ā’ishah raḍiya Allāhu ‘anhā, who said:

“The Prophet ṣallā Allāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam was lying in the bed in my house with his thigh uncovered and Abu Bakr sought permission to enter. He was allowed in and the Prophet conversed in the same very state. Then ‘Umar sought permission for entering and he was allowed in. And the Prophet conversed in that very state. Then ‘Uthman sought permission to enter; The Prophet sat down and he set right his clothes. Muhammad (one of the narrators) said: I do not say that it happened on the same day. He (‘Uthman) then entered and conversed and as he went out, ‘Ā’ishah said: Abū Bakr entered and you did not stir and did not observe much care (in arranging your clothes), then ‘Umar entered and you did not stir and did not arrange your clothes, then `Uthmān entered and you got up and set your clothes right. So, the Prophet ṣallā Allāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: Should I not show modesty to one whom even the Angels show modesty.

Sayyidunā ‘Uthmān’s Narration of Hadith

Sayyidunā ‘Uthman was among the knowledgeable among the companions of the Prophet. Beside the fact that he was among those who wrote and documented revelation, he also has narrated dozens of aḥādīth from the Prophet. The total number of aḥādīth he narrated is said to be 146. Here are 7 of them:

Hadith #1

Imām al-Bukhārī reports from the narration of Sayyidunā ‘Uthman that the Prophet ṣallā Allāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam said:

خَيْرُكُمْ مَنْ تَعَلَّمَ الْقُرْآنَ وَعَلَّمَهُ

“The best among you is he who learns the Qur’an and teaches it.”

Hadith #2

Imām Aḥmad reports from the narration of Sayyidunā ‘Uthmān ibn ‘Affān raḍiya Allāhu ‘anhu, that the Prophet ṣallā Allāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam said:

مَن تعمَّدَ عليَّ كذبًا فليتبوَّأ بيتًا في النَّارِ

“Whoever tells a lie against me intentionally, then let him occupy a house in Hell-fire.”

Hadith #3

Imām Muslim also reports from the narration of Sayyidunā ‘Uthmān ibn ‘Affān that the Prophet ṣallā Allāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam said:

“‏مَنْ تَوَضَّأَ فَأَحْسَنَ الوُضُوءَ، خَرَجَتْ خَطَايَاهُ مِنْ جَسَدِهِ حَتَّى تَخْرُجَ مِنْ تَحْتِ أَظْفَارِهِ.

“He who performs the wuḍū’ perfectly (i.e., according to Sunnah), his sins will depart from his body, all the way until it exits from under his nails.”

Hadith #4

Imām al-Nasā’ī reports from the narration of Ḥumrān…

“It was narrated from Ḥumrān that he saw ‘Uthman call for (water for) wuḍū’, then he poured water on his hands from the vessel and washed them three times. Then he put his right hand in the water and rinsed his mouth and his nose. Then he washed his face three times, and his arms up to the elbow three times. Then he wiped his head, and washed each of his feet three times. Then he said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah performing wuḍū’ like I have just done.” Then he said: “Whoever performs wuḍū’ as I have done, then stands and prays two Rak’ahs without letting his thoughts wander, his previous sins will be forgiven.’”

Hadith #5

Imām al-Tirmidhī reports from the narration of Sayyidunā ‘Uthmān ibn ‘Affān raḍiya Allāhu ‘anhu, that the Prophet ṣallā Allāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam said:

مَنْ شَهِدَ الْعِشَاءَ فِي جَمَاعَةٍ كَانَ لَهُ قِيَامُ نِصْفِ لَيْلَةٍ وَمَنْ صَلَّى الْعِشَاءَ وَالْفَجْرَ فِي جَمَاعَةٍ كَانَ لَهُ كَقِيَامِ لَيْلَةٍ

“Whoever attends ‘Ishā’ prayer in congregation, then he has the reward as if he had stood half of the night. And whoever prays ‘Ishā’ and Fajr in congregation, then he has the reward as if he had spent the entire night standing in prayer.”

Hadith #6

Imām Muslim reports from the narration of Sayyidunā ‘Uthman, that the Prophet ṣallā Allāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam says:

لَا يَنْكِحُ اَلْمُحْرِمُ, وَلَا يُنْكِحُ, وَلَا يَخْطُبُ

“The one in the state of iḥrām must not contract marriage, nor help others contract marriage, nor get engaged to marry.”

Hadith #7

Imām Abū Dāwūd reports from the narration of Sayyidunā ‘Uthmān ibn ‘Affān raḍiya Allāhu ‘anhu, who said:

كان النبيُّ صلَّى اللهُ عليه وسلَّم إذا فَرَغَ من دَفْنِ الميتِ وقف عليه فقال : استَغْفِرُوا لِأَخِيكُم ، وسَلُوا له التثبيتَ ، فإنه الآنَ يُسْأَلُ

After the burial of a dead man, the Prophet ṣallā Allāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam would stand by the grave and say, “Ask Allah to forgive your brother and supplicate for him for steadfastness because, right now, he is being questioned.”

Sayyidunā Uthman’s Passing

The Prophet ṣallā Allāhu ‘alayhi wa sallam has already informed Sayyidunā ‘Uthmān that he would be martyred in the hands of “Munāfiqūn.” This means those who would, later on, kill Sayyidunā ‘Uthmān would be known to be among Muslims. They pray like Muslims do, they read the Qur’an even better than some Muslims can do (if not better than many) and they could profess Islam eloquently. Yet, they’re were just manifesting something they hated. They, in reality, worked for a belief they didn’t have the guts to make known. They are the hypocrites. Better called Munāfiqūn. These are the people who plotted and succeeded in killing Sayyidunā ‘Uthman.

This happened during ḥajj period. Although many companions were no longer in Madīnah, the remainder had gone for ḥajj, including Sayyidah ‘Ā’ishah raḍiya Allāhu ‘anhā.

When the revolters surrounded Sayyidunā ‘Uthmān, 600 men from among the companions the few who were in Madīnah at that time, and their children stood up to defend him. But Sayyidunā ‘Uthmān preferred that none defended him, and none should be killed because of him. After all, he already knew there was fitnah that would happen, and he would be killed in the process.

When his killers got to him, they found him with the Qur’an in his hands; reading. Yet they went on and killed him. As he bled, some drops of his blood dropped on the page of the Qur’an, on the line that reads:

فَسَيَكْفِيكَهُمُ اللَّهُ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ

“Allah will surely be sufficient for you against them, for He is All Hearing, All Knowing” (Al-Baqarah, 2:137).

Sayyidunā ‘Uthman was 82 years at the time of his killing. It happened on 18 Dhū al-Ḥijjah on a Friday. And he was buried on the next day, Saturday in Baqī’. In fact, some reports imply that the portion of Baqī’ where is was buried was bought by him and given to Islam.

The duration for which Sayyidunā ‘Uthmān was the caliph of Islam extended for 12 years.

The Takeaway…

Not many can remain humble when they are materially wealthy. Likewise, not many can persevere to be spiritually devoted when they possess a hefty of material possession. No matter how many few you can think of, Sayyidunā ‘Uthmān tops the list.

With that, Sayyidunā ‘Uthmān leaves no excuses for anyone to use his wealth and status as the reason and cause for his transgression or deviation.

Sayyidunā ‘Uthmān has taught us that modesty can be observed in one’s privacy. And when you do, the Angels will respect you. And Allah will appreciate it from you. In other words, morality, even unnoticed should be part of the Muslim’s code of conduct.

One can only wonder the heart with which someone kills a person whom he surely knows is a chosen and person of Paradise. Yet, he still shoots or stabs him to death. Either way, Sayyidunā ‘Uthmān has taught us that it takes a very strong belief and trust in Allah to stand patiently while your killer approaches to kill you. Especially, when the killer is someone who’s supposed to be your brother in faith. More so, when he’s someone you’ve rendered kindness.

Perhaps, one should revisit the life story of Sayyidunā ‘Uthman, whenever some few hundreds of dollars fills he head with ego, arrogance and infidelity.

Sayyidunā ‘Uthman has a secret that made him special, in the sight of Allah and His Messenger. This is what you and I should seek to discover. Hopefully we’ll learn to be special in the sight of Allah, and be closer to Him. And this is what it means to be a shining star.
